The NHMA Advancing Physician Leaders Fellowship, formerly the Leadership Fellowship Program, was launched in 1999 to support Hispanic physicians in health policy and academia. It aims to enhance leadership skills and increase representation in governmental, academic, and institutional executive roles. By equipping physicians with essential skills and resources, the fellowship empowers them to become impactful leaders to drive meaningful change in the Hispanic community and promote health equity for all Americans.

Policy-making and Advocacy

Our distinguished fellows actively participate in the policy-making process through a comprehensive program that enhances their ability to advocate for health equity. Throughout the fellowship, participants refine their expertise and develop advanced research skills. These competencies are applied to a Capstone Project, an in-depth exploration of a critical health policy issue, which fellows present at the conclusion of the program.

Networking

NHMA presents an exceptional opportunity for professional advancement and networking through a series of impactful events. Fellows start their transformative experience with an immersive orientation at the esteemed NHMA Annual Conference from March 20-22, 2025, where they will cultivate meaningful connections with influential leaders in healthcare and policy. The program culminates in a pivotal week in Washington, D.C. in September 2025, allowing fellows to engage directly with legislators and their staff to advocate for critical healthcare issues.

Leadership Development

The program fosters leadership development by facilitating direct interactions with esteemed medical experts and national leaders. Through these enriching experiences, fellows gain valuable insights and mentorship that enhance their advocacy skills and understanding of health policy. This unique exposure empowers participants to emerge as influential leaders committed to advancing health equity in their communities.

2024 Fellows’ Testimonials

“Reflecting on my experience in the NHMA Leadership Fellowship Program, I am deeply inspired by its commitment to advancing Hispanic health equity. The opportunity to collaborate on a bill proposal aimed at increasing the Latino workforce exemplifies how the program fosters practical solutions to healthcare disparities. Engaging with federal agencies and public health leaders through interactive panels and workshops provided a strategic overview of public health policies affecting Latino communities. These discussions emphasized the need for a more diverse healthcare workforce, which is crucial in tackling health inequities. The fellowship has not only expanded my understanding of policymaking but also strengthened my leadership skills, empowering me to advocate for change effectively.”
